An Adventurous Monday

Yesterday was a really great day. Kenny had the day off and we decided to get out of daily routine and enjoy the beautiful Spring weather in DC. The other night we made a bucket list for things we want to do in and around the city. We are always passing places and events and restaurants and saying, "oh, we just have to go there," and then forget about it until we pass it again. So, we decided to be intentional and make a list. One thing on the list was to picnic with the pups near the Washington Monument. Yesterday was so pretty, it was a perfect day for a picnic. So we loaded up the dogs and headed into DC.

After lunch we played fetch for a while, and Nelly and Chaco were the highlights of the park. They were getting as many pictures from tourists as the dad gum monuments.

Another item on the list was Arlington. Yes, I have lived here over a year and never been. Kenny knew the place like the back of his hand, of course. We even got to watch from afar an Air Force funeral. It was so cool to see them in action, and to know that is what Kenny does for the CG was really special. So proud. Also, at the ball this weekend, my favorite part of all the speakers was this woman whose husband had died last year. She talked about how special it was to have the Honor Guard there on the worst day of her life.  To hear the perspective from a grieving widow made me realize the importance of what Kenny does; there was not a dry eye in the room.

The tomb of the unknown soldier. So cool.

It is at this post in the blog I would like to tell you about getting into Arlington. Kenny wanted to sneak in through Fort Meyer. We somehow went there thinking it cost $8 a person. So, Kenny wanting to save a few bucks decided it was best we weaseled our way in. Yes, a covert mission into Arlington. Park, leave the dogs in the car and hop this little fence. Problem: security cameras all over the place. So, I called Arlington to ask about the prices. Turns out it was free. Annnnd military could get a parking pass and just drive around Arlington. So, Kenny decided the parking pass wasn't really necessary and just drove right in. (In all fairness, the gate guard was paying no attention to us and a funeral was finishing up and they were about to head into the cemetery and we didn't want to hold them up) So, next thing I know we are practically fugitives in Arlington. We park illegally and head out when Nelly starts yipping like crazed baboon. In the most reverent, sacred places in all of DC. Kenny swiftly reprimands her and we just drive around Arlington like we own the place. I expect a hefty trespassing ticket from Arlington any day now.
In case you don't know I had an awkward obsession with JFK in my younger years. I just loved him. Like life size cardboard cut out in my room obsession. I'll spare you all the embarrassing detail just know that  seeing his gravesite was definitely on the list.

It was worth it, one more thing crossed off the DC bucket list! Now away from the computer and we are headed outside to enjoy the almost 80 degree weather!!
